Centerless Grinding

At Modern Grinding we use both centerless and OD CNC grinding machines. Our machinery and process is optimized for quick change over of tooling so don't hesitate to reach out about small run prototypes.

Centerless grinding is an abrasive subtractive process which is achieved using two wheels. One wheel is a regulating wheel while the other wheel has the grind profile in it. The wire passes between the two wheels during the grinding process. Centerless grinding is typically used for grinding wires which have single direction tapers from small diameter to large diameter over the length of the taper. The reason centerless is used in this type of application is because the taper angle is typically dressed into the wheel which helps keep the wheel dress stable over a longer period of time.

With centerless grinding the typical types of ground wires include core wires, mandrels and guidewires. The centerless grind taper allows surgical wires to have optimal levels of stiffness and flexibility throughout the length of the medical device.
