045 and 062 K-Wire Manufacturing

We often receive the question - "I was told to buy 045 and 062 K-Wire, what does that mean?" It refers to the diameter of the K-Wire. 045 means that the wire has a .045 inch radius around the wire. You guessed it, 062 is the same as .062 inch diameter K-wire. If you are equating inches to millimeters, .045 inches is the same as 1.1 millimeters and .062 inches is the sames as 1.6 millimeters.

For larger diameters, doctors typically call it a Steinmann Pin, even though they are designed the same. The difference between a wire and pin in the orthopedic industry is typically diameter. Larger diameters are referred to as pins. Smaller diameters are referred to as wires.
